Marshmallows roasting on an open fire. Some like them charred with the middle still fully in tact, while others like the perfect roasty toasty light brown outside mallow and gooey inside. Obviously we all know how to do the first. Jam it on a stick, poke it in the fire and let er rip! I actually from time to time enjoy a “crispy” marshmallow. Especially as a child because if you just stick it in the fire and ignite it, you peel the outer charred shell off, eat it, and then you have that cold inside that you can flame again. It was like getting two marshmallows in one!
Now for the latter technique….The perfectly roasted brown outside with the gooey mallow inside marshmallow. Some just have the knack. If you are not one of those, i did a little research to help you reach mallow magic!
First up, the stick. Store bought is dandy but if you do not have a “professional quality” marshmallow stick, find one in the woods. Make sure it is as long as your arm so you stay safe from the fire, and be sure to whittle that tip so that the marshmallow slide easily on. Next the fire. The best time to achieve roasty perfection is when the fire has burned down leaving a nice hot coal bed. My research also said you should kind of move the coals around so it ends up looking like a cave entrance. by doing this you will get even heat for the entire marshmallow. You should roast your marshmallow roughly 6 inches from the flame and keep that baby moving. If it does flame, blow out and roast again. From personal experience i found the giant marshmallows tend to fall off the stick before reaching their desired doneness, so stick with the original size. You will continue to rotate the marshmallow six inches over the coals for about 5 of the longest minutes of your life. But patience will pay off and you will be left with the perfect toasted marshmallow that you can enjoy in s’more form or just straight up!
Happy Camping!
